In conjunction with World Environment Day, which falls on June 5 of each year, the Marine Environment Department announced in June 2016 the start of the first phase of the coral cultivation project on Qaruh and Umm Al Maradim Islands, and will periodically monitor the project's progress to ensure it is progressing in the right direction. The Scientific Diving Club team was the first to implement a coral fish colony project in Kuwait. The team placed objects with specific specifications, dimensions, and selected materials in selected locations deep within the Kuwaiti marine environment, with the aim of increasing the size and area of Kuwait's natural coral reefs, thereby increasing the country's fish stocks. Since 2016, the team has been monitoring and documenting changes to the colony project.
